Based in Daytona Beach, Florida, TopBuild is the No. 1 installer of insulation to the U.S. residential construction business, and today the firm is at work in more than 40 percent of new housing starts. Until 2015, TopBuild operated as a subsidiary of Masco, with the new TopBuild name reflecting its commitment to maintaining top status in the industry and a single-minded commitment to its customers.
Because the insulation market is highly competitive and fragmented, TopBuild considers its competitive differentiator to be firm-specific resources that have led to economies of scale. These include its carefully built national distribution network, established sales channels, diversified product lines, local presence, and strong cash flows—all of which enable the firm to deliver efficient installation with short delivery times. TopBuild believes this responsiveness reduces its exposure to the residential housing cyclicality that its competitors may experience. Innovations stem from the “Environments for Living” program, which consolidates expertise in building science to respond to new demands for energy efficiency and building code trends.
In 2019, insulation products represented 72 percent of installation sales, with other building products like gutters, glass, windows, fireplaces and shelving making up the rest. The firm employs about 10,000 people in the United States.
