LHC Group provides home health care services to patients in the United States, including post-acute, therapy, and hospice care. The firm also runs 124 residential facilities serving patients who have transitioned out of a hospital but whose conditions remain too severe to go home.

Based in Louisiana, with 29,000 employees in 37 states and the District of Columbia, LHC was founded in 1994 as a small-town home health agency with a mission to serve the neediest and most vulnerable members of the community.

Today its focus on innovating person-centered care remains at the core of LHC’s culture. This Knowledge Leader aims to move the industry forward while also encouraging its peers to adapt. When the pandemic broke out, LHC immediately expanded its services to include telehealth, sent staff home to work remotely, helped assume care for COVID patients in hospitals with which it shares joint venture agreements, and implemented technology to help patients visit physicians virtually.

To that end, LHC believes its ability to leverage technology has created a competitive advantage that has led to cost-efficient growth and better patient care. For example, its proprietary Service Value Point system captures all points of data for home health care services, including reporting and billing. The system was awarded a patent for its unique ability to target resource units for each patient based on staff assessment of a patient’s skilled nursing and therapy needs.

LHC is an industry leader in quality and patient satisfaction ratings, both of which drive the patient referrals that accounted for the firm’s 22 percent growth in 2020. This year, LHC announced plans to be acquired by Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group.

As of 9/30/22, LHC Group was held in the Knowledge Leaders Strategy.
